2015 Internet Trends Report from KPCB

Mary Meeker just released the flagship annual report on Internet trends for 2015. It is the 20th report released by her starting from 1995. Mary Meeker is a partner of KPCB, a renowned venture capital firm. On the report you can find the newest trend on Internet from mobile usage to market breakdown.

Here are the summary:

  • The Internet is still growing, but at a slower speed now: Internet users grew by 8% in 2014, down from 10% in 2013 and 11% in 2012;
  • Smartphones also grew strongly but at a lower speed: 23% in 2014 compared to 27% in 2013 and 65% in 2012; China grew 21% while India grew 55%;
  • Mobile advertising is growing strongly (+34%) while desktop is decelerating;
  • People are spending more time on videos on vertical screens (i.e. mobile phones);
  • Computing is changing business process, one segment at a time: Slack, Square, Stripe…
  • Messaging apps improves and grows a lot; If WeChat trend continues to play out globally, these messaging apps may evolve into central communication hubs;
  • More user-generated content from millions of creators from social media: Pinterest, Facebook, Twitch…
  • 12-24+ year olds remain the trendsetters;
  • Just-in-time information (e.g. GPS turn-by-turn navigation and breaking news follow-up) and just-in-time products and services (e.g. Uber for transportation, OpenTable for dinning, Airbnb for travelling) are enabled by mobiles + sensors + humans;
  • Commercial drone market has bright future potential, though the risks should not be ignored;
  • Cyber attack grew in size, complexity and risks;
  • Globalisation, structural changes, mobile connectivity and generational shift change the way many people work;
  • Focus on big Internet markets: China is #1 on total users while India is #1 in new users additions;
